【Objective】The present experiment was conducted to explore the effects of nitrogen fertilizer application and planting density on growth and yield of high quality hybrid rice cultivar Baiyou 838 in order to provide high yield cultivation techniques to farmers. 【Method】A field experiment using application of different nitrogen levels and planting density of a fine grain quality rice cultivar Baiyou 838 was conducted in Beiliu, Guangxi during late season of 2010. 【Result】 The number of tillers and effective panicles increased with increase in nitrogen application from 105-225 kg/ha and planting density from 240,000-360,000 plants/ha. Planting density contributed more to increase in number of effective panicles. Nitrogen level had significant effect on the yield of Baiyou 838. The effect of planting density on the yield was highly correlated with the nitrogen application. Under low nitrogen application, the yield increased with increase in planting density, but under high nitrogen application, higher planting density worsened the plant population and resulted in low yield. 【Conclusion】The suitable nitrogen application and planting density for Baiyou 838 were 105-165 kg/ha and 300,000 plants/ha, respectively.
