【Objective】The present paper aimed to investigate the current status of independent innovation system for agricultural science and technology in Guangxi in order to provide the references for further development of agricultural science and technology in Guangxi. 【Method】The investigations were carried out using informal discussions, site inspection, expert consultation, questionnaire and letter surveys. Some strategies have been suggested based on the results of investigations. 【Result】During the process of its development, independent innovation system for agricultural science and technology recorded a great success in following areas: researches and development of new varieties and technologies, construction of agricultural sci-tech innovation system, improvement of independent innovative environment, scientific and technological exchanges with outside worlds and enhancement of intellectual property. The construction of independent innovation system for agricultural science and technology proceeded mainly through the developments of six systems which included: agricultural scientific research system, agricultural technology development system, basic agricultural technology extension system, agricultural sci-tech investment system, management and cooperation system, and agricultural research infrastructure system. However, the agricultural sci-tech innovation system was still imperfect and sci-tech innovation ability were insufficient. Furthermore, low transformation rate of agricultural sci-tech achievement, backward agricultural sci-tech service, shortage of innovative talents and funds, weak basic sci-tech condition and inflexibility of sci-tech innovation system were also found to be the main constraints. 【Suggestion】In order to promote the development of independent innovation system for agricultural science and technology, some suggestions have been made which included further reformation of agricultural sci-tech system, strengthening integrated demonstration of agricultural science and technologies, construction of agricultural sci-tech research and development centers or enterprises, improving base sci-tech conditions, establishment of a new agricultural technology extension system, augmenting sci-tech investment, building independent innovative team, creation of a favorable environment for independent innovation, etc.
