【Objective】 The objective of the current study was to determine the biotype structure of white-backed plant hopper (WBPH) in different rice growing areas of Guangxi, and to provide control measures for WBPH. 【Method】 The population group detection method was used to detect virulence of WBPH population in variety TN1(susceptible check), and three test varieties, viz., ARC10239, Ptb33, N'Diang Marie containing Wbph2, Wbph3 and Wbph5 gene, respectively, and biotype of WBPH individual was detected by honeydew quantity detection method under field conditions. 【Result】 WBPH showed different virulence ability at different detection stages. Generally, it showed strong virulence ability in test rice varieties with Wbph1 or Wbph2 genes. WBPH biotype Ⅰ was found in larger proportion in populations collected from different sites. Further, the proportion of WBPH biotype Ⅱ increased at various levels in populations collected from different counties, viz., Longzhou, Hepu, Rongxian, Tianyang, Yongfu during resent years. 【Conclusion】 On the basis of the results, use of the rice varieties with Wbph1 and Wbph2 genes should be avoided in breeding programs tailored to breed WBPH resistant rice varieties. The extended resistant varieties not only resist WBPH typeⅠ, but also have certain degree of resistance to WBPH type Ⅱ.
